Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, is a beautiful place.Ê Especially when it's overcast and raining.Ê I remember working on it as part of a landscape painting class.Ê I enjoyed the color of the bright violet flowers against the green grass. Ê I love the muted feeling of the overcast day.Ê I hated being cold and wet while working on this painting.Ê I believe I got this painting in the car just as the rain started coming down for real.
One aspect of plein aire painting is the need to work quickly.Ê This is where the Impressionists excelled.Ê The style I typically go for is definitely NOT Impressionistic, so this painting was a real experience--how to getÊ results without copying Monet.
