Painting: Ave Sol
November 20, 1998: oil on canvas: 24" x 36"

In late November, I finally was able to see again--my eyes became uncrossed enough. Ê And the winter storms had not yet begun.Ê The only way I could celebrate was with this painting; it's my way of saying, "Bless the sun!Ê I'm still alive."Ê For although I'm out of the pit, and I've climbed to the top of the hill into the sun, I'm still far from where I need to be.Ê And the land is still unfamiliar and strange, even though I know it very well.

This was my first painting that takes place in full sun.Ê But the image is still rather foreboding and hazy.Ê Well, that wasn't my initial idea, but things worked out that way.Ê Just because you can see straight again doesn't always mean that you know how to handle it.Ê Still, I'm pretty happy with this painting.Ê It says what I was thinking even better than I expected; you see, the hazy light was good, yet foreboding in that I still had a long way to go.Ê I'm only discovering now what that distance was.
