I keep a notebook by the bed and write ideas in it on occasion.Ê Sometimes, I don't know where the thought comes from, or why I even came up with it.Ê All I know is, "here's a neat idea!"Ê Well, this painting was a neat idea.Ê I'm sure it is based on a memory, I just don't know which memory.Ê It has something to do with "returning home."Ê The crystal on the spire, the forested hill, the evening sky, the quiet lake, all have meaning.Ê Even the hands rising from the water have meaning.Ê I just don't know what it means! With this painting, I wanted to show the scene in the shadows of the setting sun--in that twilight time!Ê When everything's in shadow, there aren't many bright/dark areas to get a reasonable 3-dimensional effect.Ê On the other hand, there are places in deep shadow.Ê Maxfield Parrish had some paintings that took place in really deep shadow.Ê He made everything very flat.Ê I didn't want to go quite that route, so I tried to use very muted colors, with a few dark shadows.Ê I think it helped. This painting illustrates the difficulty of getting a decent photograph.Ê I'll have to redo this shot to bring out the sunlit areas a little better.Ê Also, there appears to be a blemish on the film near the top of the cliff.
