Invisible Self Portrait: In the Pit |
|
|
When you're brain doesn't function properly, everything's pretty awful.Ê For over four months, I felt like I was suspended in a pit.Ê I was crosseyed and couldn't see very well at all.Ê I sometimes wondered if I would ever be able to paint again. Ê I suspect that I looked like a drug addict or a basket case during that time. Ê But, when I could see again in mid November, 1997, I started working on this painting. I began with a pencil sketch on 9"x12" drawing paper.Ê Using an opaque projector, I transferred it onto the canvas in willow charcoal.Ê Then, I painted it. Ê I did the lawn and trees first, in thin, dark, neutralized green.Ê I also did the background trees much thinner, with a little blue and yellow added in.Ê Then, I did the sky.Ê I think I painted the sky pretty liberally, not worrying about the trees since I was planning on improving them afterwards anyway.Ê Most of the hard work was the walkway and the flowers.Ê The figure wasn't difficult--there's not much detail in it. This photograph, as usual, has problems with the lighting.Ê The entire lawn should be a shadowy green. Last updated on Friday, December 21, 2001 |
