Painting: Prince Charming
April, 1998: oil on canvas; 18" x 24"

This painting was fun.Ê I had an image of a little girl playing with her toys in the house, and it seemed that perhaps she was daydreaming.Ê So, I worked it out a bit, and this was what I got.Ê It seems obvious enough to me, so I'll let you make up the story yourself.

The sketch drove me crazy because I didn't have any photos of little girls faces from quite this angle.Ê I think I originally did it in pastels several months earlier just to figure out how it looked.Ê I assumed the drapes were closed, and that the light coming through was pretty warm.Ê I made the back wall a warm purple (mauve) color. Ê The warm light from the window then helped the foreground figures stand out better. Ê The girl's dress is lit by the dim, reflected light, keeping it mauve and reducing its importance in the painting.
