Painting: Processional Terminalis
December, 1998: oil on canvas; 24" x 30"

Death is the graduation from life, the passing of the soul from this physical universe back to the metaphysical universe, and on to whatever comes up next.Ê In this procession, they're carrying the ashes of their mother to the final resting place, both to show respect, and to celebrate her passage home.Ê And, they hope, she has graduated successfully.

Seems like 1997 and 1998 saw the passing on of many well known people.Ê Even though you know you can't hang around here forever, it still did seem like a bit much. Ê The characters are marching in the twilight shadows (ah, my favorite time!), so they're kept pretty dim.Ê The torch helped bring them forward just a tad, and allowed me to use a touch of bright color to distinguish them from the dim green of the background.
