Painting: Purple Lotus
May, 1998: oil on canvas; 24" x 30"

My favorite paintings often appear to me when Iâm trying to go to sleep, and I have to write down notes so I donât forget what I saw.Ê I think that this painting is related to the ancient, Zen koan, "What was your face before you were born?" This is a soul just before birth.Ê I wish I could tell you more, but thatâs as much as I know. Sometimes, the artist knows less about WHAT heâs saying, than he does about HOW to say it.

Although this isn't a particularly difficult looking painting, it wasn't as easy as I'd have liked.Ê For one thing, I had only painted a nude figure in class, and it wasn't all that good a job.Ê For another thing, I didn't have a model, so I had to make one up.Ê And thirdly, I've never seen lotus leaves like that (yes, their supposed to be lotus leaves).Ê I had to make some corrections in class several months after I had "finished" the painting.
