Painting: Star Baby
December, 1998: oil on canvas; 24" x 36"

I think this represents a soul choosing to be born on the planet Earth, standing at a doorway in heavenâs temple.Ê Some people have suggested that it represents Apollo, or Christ, or God.Ê I believe that each viewer should take a minute to provide a story, since the purpose of art is to provide the path for each person to tread in search of his or her own life's story.

I asked my teacher for an idea to work into a painting.Ê She gave me an idea from a story she had read once.Ê I revised it a bit, a very convenient, artistic ruse.Ê What I got differs from what she originally suggested, but whoâs to complain?Ê It said something to me that I hadn't even conceived before, and now it's one of my favorite paintings!Ê The technical challenge here was to paint the various shiny metal items: the sun's image on the floor, the figure in the round image, and the hanging spire above the door.Ê I spent several weeks staring at metal candlestick holders, silver whatchamacallits, and photographs.Ê I did it, but it's still difficult.

I suspect that this photo needs to be replaced as well.Ê I see a little glare in the lower part of the painting.
