Painting: Thieves
March, 1998: oil on canvas: 24" x 36"

I've enjoyed playing Dungeons and Dragons, and the thought of two thieves being surprised while stealing some artifact seemed like a good painting.Ê Imagine, here you are poking about in the ruins of some ancient castle or monestary in the moonlight, and suddenly, this thing looms out from around a corner.Ê Quick, where's the emergency exit!

Technically, the problem was, how to paint a scene lit only by moonlight.Ê In real moonlight, there's very little color.Ê And the light itself is very cold and blue. Ê I decided to abandon accuracy and go for the drama!Ê So I brightened the scene a bit, and used more color that one would normally see.Ê I did keep the color reasonably cool and bluish, which worked well with the Beholder (that's the D&D monster) being a nice, cold color.Ê Having everything else just a bit warmer, there's a reasonable contrast between the moonlit monster and everything else around it.
