If Purple Lotus was about a soul about to be born into this world, I suppose the Lotus Dancer is about the soul's journey through life, perhaps at that point when she passes from childhood to adulthood.Ê I can only guess, however.Ê Although this painting is clearly the successor to the Purple Lotus, it's meaning is as unclear to me as the former.Ê Oh well!
I wanted the dress to be very sheer and light--almost weightless.Ê I think that it makes the figure seem, somehow, more "real" if it's clothed--by contrast, the nude figure in Purple Lotus seems more mystical.Ê I originally painted this figure nude, then added the dress at the end.Ê Where the material is heavier, I simply painted it heavier, hiding the figure beneath.Ê I made the dress purple for an obvious reason.
Again, this photograph is poorly lit.Ê It will be replaced when I get another chance.
