This painting is my very first fairy scene.Ê I'd never painted fairies before. Ê I also wanted to paint a dark scene with lots of flickering lights, normally associated with fairies.Ê This is what I got.Ê If there's a story, message, or anything else in this painting, I haven't the foggiest idea what it is. I started this as a grisaille, using raw umber mixed with ultramarine blue.Ê That made it all very dark and moody.Ê Then, I added raw sienna and burnt sienna, mixed with burnt umber for the leaves.Ê I finally did the flowers, the fairies, and the plants in color over the grisaille underpainting.Ê The very last thing I added were the lights and the highlights, and lots of little, sparkly flashes.Ê That was the fun part.
