Painting: SeaDragon
month, 1999: oil on canvas; 18" x 24"

Okay, I admit it.Ê I really wanted to paint a mermaid.Ê But, I also wanted to paint giant jellyfish, a dragon, and anything else that would fit underwater.Ê So I found a way to lay out a scene with jellyfish, a dragon, and a mermaid.Ê I can't think of any message to convey.Ê Heck, I just think the mermaid looks cool.Ê But the dragon makes for a neat title.

The technical problem painting a submarine view, is the way seawater absorbs the sunlight.Ê Once you get below 20 or 30 feet, everything turns a really drab shade of bluish-grey.Ê I really muted the colors here, especially on the jellyfish, which tend to be kind of drab anyway.Ê This made the mermaid more visible, since she's just a bit more colorful.Ê The ocean surface is the brightest thing in the painting, especially in terms of color.Ê But that's the way it is under water.
